A movie club worth joining

A film club worth joining: There might not have been a ton of people in Alex’s bar in Long Beach on Sunday evening to find the Venue duo film clubbut those who were it is unlikely to forget the experience in a hurry.

Everything is so simple yet gloriously surreal. Vince Cuneo plays guitar, Jessamyn Violet plays drums. No bass, no vocals – they create a surf-garage-punk instrumental noise that’s equal parts chaotic in a dive bar and suave in a nightclub.

On disc, especially the 2020s black flamingo album, they invite friends such as Rami Jaffee (Foo Fighters) and Jessy Greene (P!nk) with them. But on Alex’s stage, the two don’t need any help. A real-life couple, Violet and Cuneo feed off each other sonically and aesthetically. If Cuneo pulls a crazy face, some sort of Elvis Zappa deal, Violet throws her head back harder. A joyful symbiosis.

They don’t have mics so they don’t introduce any of the songs and we have to be more tuned in before we recognize them. But anyway, it hardly matters – it all merges into a wonderful wave. There’s a David Lynch quality to the vibe – both musicians are wearing white suits and shades, and the music could be the score to something great. We will definitely check out Movie Club further.

Before that, songs for sabotage provided a very different experience (although they are also a duo and also a real couple). Formed in New York but now based in SoCal, the duo mix dream pop and garage rock to great effect. The set started slow but by the end the band was in and that energy fueled the crowd. Great tunes, great atmosphere. Again, we will delve deeper into this project.
