Bogs talks about music therapy at the Carthage Music Club meeting | Lifestyles

Panola College alumnus James Bogs, former Beckville band manager and certified music therapist, shared his journey from music teacher to music therapist with the Carthage Music Club in the First Methodist Church Parlor at the club meeting in October.

Program manager Stephen George introduced Bogs, a Beckville resident who recently completed the music therapy program at Sam Houston State University. With audience participation and a Power Point presentation, Bogs explained how music can meet the needs of many patient and student populations, particularly in the fields of medicine, psychology, special education, palliative care and forensic medicine. He demonstrated with concrete examples how music therapy can be a catalyst for healing.

Club President Dwaine Hubbard welcomed visitors Kim Bogs, Chris Barnes, Alex Wohllaib and Julia Mock, as well as new club member Caroline Scott.

The business meeting included a discussion of the artist’s concert in April and the upcoming District 3 conference to be hosted by the Carthage Music Club on October 23.

Kristy Cawthon led the band singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and Stephen Foster’s “Hard Times Come Again No More”. Sarah Baker accompanied.

Hosts for the evening were Becky Gullette and Dwaine Hubbard.

Members present were Baker, Sandra Bauer, Cawthon, Carolyn Copeland, Judy Galetar, George, Gullette, Jacinda Gwinn, Hubbard, Joyce Hughes, Nancy Langford, Marcia McKillop, Elizabeth Morris, Claire Windham and Tori Windham.

The annual American Music Program Parade will be performed November 9 in Murphy-Payne Hall on the Panola College campus at 7 p.m. The meeting is open to everyone.

Carthage Music Club is affiliated with the Texas Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs.
