BYU’s Electronic Dance Music Club hosts events to help music lovers come together and have new and unique experiences.
Electronic dance music is best known for being music performed in nightclubs, raves, and festivals. The gigs are usually very fast-paced, made up of various lights and different DJ performances.
Communication student co-chair Jose Silva helped start the club in August 2019. The club has over 40 members, 25 of whom regularly attend club events.
“Part of our mission is to help people understand what EDM culture is. We want to help them broaden their musical tastes and help them get rid of stereotypes. It’s not all about drugs, ”Silva said.
BYU graduate Chloe Andersen joined the club in June 2020 when she became friends with Silva and other club members. Andersen was initially reluctant to join the club due to her unfamiliarity with EDM, but is now happy to have joined.
“There is a very diverse group of people at the club and it’s always fun,” said Andersen.
Many club members have all the music production equipment they need, so these are just people there to learn, said Silva.
“Closing your mind to this genre prevents you from having cool experiences.” There is an obvious stereotype about people who love EDM, but this club helps you look beyond that, ”Andersen said.
