Welcome to the Art Lovers Movie Club, where you’ll find a selection of artist videos available exclusively online at artreview.com.

“Yourself”, the protagonist of Petra Szemán Openings!!! (2022) runs local trains through intermediate landscapes. Fragments of different worlds appear, signaling perceptual breaks that seem to force subjectivity out of itself, into strange new relationships of interdependence and intoxication with the moving image. “There is a world that I can only see when I am turned away from it”, they observe.

As part of the artist’s ongoing exploration of the radical potential of animation and fandom, Openings!!! rejects its own cinematic boundaries, instead surrendering to the free play of a multiplanar and ultimately elusive meta-worldview. Referencing anime credits, video game loading screens, and regional train journeys, Szemán’s film intensifies the gaps between layers of moving images in an effort to capture the kinds of experiences that may lie beyond human perceptual boundaries.

About the artist

Petra Szemán (they/them) is a moving image artist who works with animation and playful landscapes. Their practice focuses on the murky boundaries that separate the real from the fictional, and the kind of lives and experiences that are possible within them. Using a virtual version of themselves as a protagonist traveling through animatic realms, they explore threshold situations and spaces to dissect how our memories and ourselves are constructed in an oversaturated landscape of fiction (to both on and off screen) – to walk on the line located
between dystopian and utopian settings, eyes fixed on new queer horizons. Szemán graduated from Newcastle University (2013-2017) with a BA in Fine Art, and has since exhibited at NEoN Festival, Dundee, Scotland; Large screen Southend; BALTIC Center for Contemporary Art, Gateshead; Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland; ICC, Tokyo; and The Photographers’ Gallery, London. After spending two years in Japan as the recipient of a research grant from the Japanese Ministry of Education and Culture (2018-2020), Petra is now
based between North East England and Tokyo, Japan. They are currently directing “On Animatics”, a project commissioning video works that merge animated images, games and cartoons; and co-author of the companion book WEEB THEORY with Jamie Sutcliffe (Banner Repeater, 2022).

LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) – Once a month, seniors in East Texas come together for a movie outing and to meet the food needs of their community.

It’s called the “Silver Screen Movie Club” in Longview.

This month the seniors gathered at the Longview ‘AMC’ 10.

“We’re skipping school today, girlfriends day,” said a club member.

It was the Elvis movie, and the price of admission was a donation of canned food.

“I love Elvis. I love Elvis. And helping out with the canning, too,” said movie buff Donna Kibodeaux.

Sponsored by the law firm ‘Goudarzi and Young’, people aged 55 and over can attend, many of whom are physically disabled.

“I had surgery in the middle of June and this is my first outing,” member Gloria Williams said.

“There are actually nursing homes that have brought people on buses and I’m so proud that we can do that, and we’re going to continue to do that,” said host Brent Goudarzi.

Many are happy that a day just for them is made possible.

“It’s an opportunity to give back to the community that has given so much to our office,” says Goudarzi.

Shown on seven screens and each auditorium packed, they’re enjoying a day to have fun and do something to help others.

All food donations will go to local food pantries.

A film club worth joining: There might not have been a ton of people in Alex’s bar in Long Beach on Sunday evening to find the Venue duo film clubbut those who were it is unlikely to forget the experience in a hurry.

Everything is so simple yet gloriously surreal. Vince Cuneo plays guitar, Jessamyn Violet plays drums. No bass, no vocals – they create a surf-garage-punk instrumental noise that’s equal parts chaotic in a dive bar and suave in a nightclub.

On disc, especially the 2020s black flamingo album, they invite friends such as Rami Jaffee (Foo Fighters) and Jessy Greene (P!nk) with them. But on Alex’s stage, the two don’t need any help. A real-life couple, Violet and Cuneo feed off each other sonically and aesthetically. If Cuneo pulls a crazy face, some sort of Elvis Zappa deal, Violet throws her head back harder. A joyful symbiosis.

They don’t have mics so they don’t introduce any of the songs and we have to be more tuned in before we recognize them. But anyway, it hardly matters – it all merges into a wonderful wave. There’s a David Lynch quality to the vibe – both musicians are wearing white suits and shades, and the music could be the score to something great. We will definitely check out Movie Club further.

Before that, songs for sabotage provided a very different experience (although they are also a duo and also a real couple). Formed in New York but now based in SoCal, the duo mix dream pop and garage rock to great effect. The set started slow but by the end the band was in and that energy fueled the crowd. Great tunes, great atmosphere. Again, we will delve deeper into this project.

A movie club worth joining

Art Lovers Movie Club: Haig Aivazian, “Prometheus” https://vivasclub7.com/art-lovers-movie-club-haig-aivazian-prometheus/ Wed, 13 Jul 2022 13:31:36 +0000 https://vivasclub7.com/art-lovers-movie-club-haig-aivazian-prometheus/

Welcome to the Art Lovers Movie Club, where you’ll find a selection of artist videos available exclusively online at artreview.com.

At the first post-Soviet Olympics in 1992, the “Dream Team” – a group of NBA superstar basketball players – swept away all opposition, winning the gold medal for the United States. The team’s undoubted dominance coincided with, and reflected, a new era of global politics, epitomized by the United States’ technological and environmental assault on Iraq a year earlier.

Aivazian’s film draws parallels between these two events as paradigm shifts in hard power and soft power, exploring the celebration of violence that occurs during the passing of the torch, both literal and metaphorical. Using found footage, the film encompasses everything from technological and chemical warfare to solar explosions that occurred light years in the past. On a human level, the film also questions the extractive drives that weaponize other technologies: black oil and black bodies; tracking missiles and people; concealment of an airplane and a war crime.

About the artist

Haig Aivazian (born in 1980) lives and works in Beirut. His work has been presented at the Berlin Biennale (2022), the Yokohama Triennale (2020), the Marrakech Biennale (2016), the Montreal Biennale (2016), the Istanbul Biennale (2015) , at the Venice Biennale (2015) and at Videobrasil, Sao Paulo (2013, 2017), and exhibited at the Swiss Institute, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Home Works 8, Ashkal Alwan, Beirut; Jameel Arts Center, Dubai; Nottingham Contemporary, UK; MAXXI, Rome; and McaM, Shanghai among other museums and galleries. MoviePass is dead, long live MoviePass.

The failed start that allowed moviegoers to see multiple movies a month for a flat-rate subscription was replaced by a movie theater chain’s own membership programs.

Cinemark, which operates Cinemark at the Louis Joliet Mall, recently hit the one million member mark with its Cinemark Movie Club.

The Plano, Texas-based chain plans to celebrate the milestone by giving away 1 million points, along with other promotions and events. An average of 3,000 people per theater signed up for the program, which costs $9.99 per month and covers a 2D ticket, additional $9.99 tickets for members, deferrals, concession discounts of 20% and the possibility of reserving places and buying tickets. in advance free of charge online.

Cinemark said customer satisfaction with the subscription program, which also has a platinum level with more benefits, topped 90% in surveys.

“Cinemark developed Movie Club by listening carefully to our moviegoers, and we were the first operator to launch a theatrical movie subscription offer in North America. Our unique program appeals to a wide range of moviegoers with rollover benefits and discounts on concessions that encourage members to visit more frequently while building loyalty to Cinemark,” said Sean Gamble, President and CEO of Cinemark. “Reaching the milestone of one million members reaffirms that our customers appreciate the exceptional benefits and unparalleled value proposition that Movie Club membership offers.”
