The Manhattan Theater Club added “Taking Care of Baby,” a 2007 play by “Matilda” winner Tony Dennis Kelly, to its Off Broadway list this fall.
Broadway mainstays Reed Birney and Margaret Colin will top a cast that will also include Kristen Bush and Amelia Campbell. Erica Schmidt, who directed the solo release “Humor Abuse” at MTC in 2009, directs.
Kelly, who recently wrote the TV series “Utopia” for Channel 4 in the UK, landed a Tony earlier this year for her book “Matilda”, the top-selling and much-loved tuner adaptation of Roald Dahl’s tale. “Taking Care of Baby”, which took place in Birmingham in 2007, focuses on a woman accused of murdering her two children.
MTC has scheduled “Baby” for City Center Stage II, the smaller of its two Off Broadway spaces. The show joins a 2013-14 lineup at MTC that includes three Broadway releases – Mary-Louise Park starring “The Snow Geese”, Sarah Jessica Parker and Blythe Danner topliner “The Commons of Pensacola” and “Outside Mullingar,” the new play. by John Patrick Shanley with Debra Messing – and two plays that will be performed on MTC’s other Off Broadway stage: “Tales from Red Vienna” and “When We Were Young and Unafraid” with Cherry Jones.
“Taking Care of Baby” premieres on November 5th before opening on November 19th.
