One of the most fascinating, exciting and inspiring movies I’ve seen this year Popcorn Frights Film Festival has been Mike Mignola: drawing monstersso I’m especially thrilled to have the documentary screened at multiple events this fall, with the Secret Movie Club in Los Angeles hosting the first public screening at Million Dollar Theater in LA Saturday, October 15!

In addition to seeing Mike Mignola: drawing monstersattendees will have the chance to see a 35mm screening of James Whale Frankenstein, and the double feature will be followed by a live Q&A with the legendary Mignola himself, as well as Secret Movie Club founder Craig Hammill and documentary filmmakers Jim Demonakos and Kevin Konrad Hanna! A limited-edition poster created by Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart (see below) will be available for purchase at the event.

If you can’t make it to double functionality, Mike Mignola: drawing monsters will also be celebrated with a panel featuring Jim Demonakos and Kevin Konrad Hanna at LightBox Exhibition on October 16, as well as a screening at the Portland Film Festival on October 22.

Press release: (September 26, 2022) The highly anticipated documentary Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters from filmmakers Kevin Konrad Hanna and Jim Demonakos will be spotlighted in a series of high profile events in October. The film, which raised over half a million dollars on Kickstarter, features in-depth interviews with legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, as well as interviews with visionary Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro, best-selling writer Neil Gaiman (The Sandman), The Book of Life director Jorge Guiterrez, acclaimed novelist Victor LaValle (The Changeling), comedian Patton Oswalt, actor Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar and more others.

The film will be celebrated at three events in October:

  • The Secret Movie Club of Los Angeles will present the first-ever public screening of the highly anticipated documentary Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters at the Million Dollar Theater in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 15, 2022. The screening will include a live onstage interview with Mike Mignola, the creator legend of Hellboy, alongside documentary makers Jim Demonakos and Kevin Konrad Hanna, and Secret Movie Club founder Craig Hammill. The evening will kick off with a special 35mm archival screening of Universal Studios’ iconic Frankenstein, the James Whale-directed film. Attendees will be able to purchase a limited-edition 18″ x 24″ poster of Mignola and award-winning colorist Dave Stewart on site.   • LightBox Expo, Pasadena’s multi-faceted experience for everyone from aspiring artists and students to professionals and fans, with a focus on animation, illustration and concept art, will host a panel with filmmakers on Sunday October 16 at noon PT.
